Extra lock

A second secret you share with one person. Safety numbers do not turn it on.

Everyday chat is already private for today. Extra lock adds a second secret that you share with one person. It never travels with the message. The chat shows Extra lock only after that secret is actually shared.

How to share it

  1. Open the person, then Extra lock.
  2. Copy your extra-lock link, or show the QR.
  3. They paste the link, or scan the code, on their phone.

In person with a QR scan is the strongest path. A Discord, Signal, or iMessage private message of that link is okay if you already trust that account as them. Treat the link like a password. Discord can still see a DM. Do not post it in a group or a public channel.

What Extra lock is not

  • Mark as verified only records that you compared a safety number. It does not turn Extra lock on.
  • Matching emoji or words is an identity check. It does not share the extra secret.
  • Post-quantum signing does not turn Extra lock on, and Extra lock does not make everyday chat quantum-safe by itself.

If the secret leaks

Anyone with the extra-lock secret and a copy of the traffic can read those Extra lock messages. Share it only with that person. If you think it leaked, stop using Extra lock with them and start a new secret.
